Equipment and Supplies...

Kaponomana recommends the following supplies and equipment to be used for...

...General Training and care

Adjustable, snap buckle, nylon collars are sturdy and sufficient when coupled with clicker or other operant training. Depending on the puppy, 2 different size puppy collars may be needed until the pup is 2 year old. We typically get the 5/8" wide with 10-16 inch adjustability until they are 8-10 months old and sometimes the next size (3/4" wide 14 - 20 in. adjustability) is needed.

At 18-24 months of age, most of the neck growth has been completed, this is a good time to fit your canine for a leather rolled collar. The rolled leather collars are not so apt to break the hairs in their mane. We use this collar for all training and trials excluding the heavier sport work.

6 foot latigo leather are standard in most types of training. We have found that the wider is not necessarily stronger. When appropriate training methods are used, the leash provides a connection between you and your companion... it is not meant to be pulled on, yanked or feel an extreme amount of weight or force. The Amish make many good leather products. 2, 3 and 4 foot leads are also handy lengths for competition.
A deep coat rake is a handle tool to gently pull out undercoat that is ready to  shed.
Pin brushes work best for daily grooming out side of the shedding times of the year.
Slicker brushes work wonders when to collect all the stray, loose, hairs. This brush is handy to keep your furniture and carpet hair free.
Stainless steel bowl or ceramic bowls can help prevent "acne" on the muzzle. Acne is commonly seen on dogs that eat out of plastic bowls. A 2 qt size is a good size, for all types of diets.

Fiberglass, enclosed kennels are great for puppy house breaking and is the safest type of kennel to use for all types of transportation.

We recommend the following sizes at different stages:

8 week old transport kennel: 24 x 16.25 x 14.25 (intermediate)

10-16 weeks transport kennel: 27 x 20 x 19 (medium)

adult home and travel crate: minimum of 24 x 36 x 27 (xlarge)

When your living area allows for it, an ex-pen is an excellent alternative for "their space". Each canine will appreciate their own personal space, a "den". Crating or pen-ing your companion is an intelligent method to keep them safe and prevent bad habit when you have to be away from them. It is simply selecting for them a safe place to sleep...and sleep is what canines do when they are not being active with us or in their own mischief. Remember, it is always easier to prevent a bad habit (chewing, marking, rummaging, etc) than to re-shape it!
Excellent equipment to have for any type of traveling... to competition events, on family outings or on vacations...This wire crate folds down into a suitcase size unit that is approximately 4 inches thick. We often travel with our crew in fiberglass crates in the car and carry these fold down wire crates into hotel rooms or event grounds. They are compact and portable, while the fiberglass crates provide maximum protection while traveling in the car in case of any accident situations.
